I noticed in the spring of 2014, while assisting someone with a computer problem they were having, that Yahoo had begun using different servers to handle traffic from different parts of the country. This in and of itself means nothing because load distribution across multiple servers is essential to keeping a high traffic site like Yahoo up and running. However, upon a bit of further investigation I realized that they had undoubtedly (like Google) begun processing people’s searches based upon their street address more or less integrating this capability into the technology they were already using for load management purposes. On Thursday, February 23, 2017 at around 3:05 PM, I called Freedom Scientific’s tech support about a problem I have been having with JAWS 18 since installing Office 365 back in December 2016; speaking to the young woman who answered the phone. When I explained to her what my problem was, and that it was occurring when I used JAWS 18 yet not Narrator, on both machines I tested; I just couldn’t believe my ears when she sat there and told me it wasn’t a problem with JAWS and that I needed to talk to the accessibility folks over at Microsoft. Back in May of 2016 Amazon made some moves with its Kindle Store that showed me very plainly two things. Firstly: Amazon, and other companies like it, only care about their own bottom line; their commitment to Self-Publishers, Affiliate Marketers and other sellers they have partnerships with being a secondary consideration when it comes to their desire to make ever more money. Secondly: With the lay of the land being what it is for those of us trying to make a few dollars online; one really does need to understand that the life-style that many Internet Companies claim that can be had “has nothing to do with you. One day around the beginning of January, 2017, a friend of mine and I were on a call; her Windows 10 Professional powered Dell computer being evaluated for HIPAA compliance so she could start her new online job; medical coding from home. However, the IT Department of the company she’s coding for didn’t really inspire much confidence; saying software wasn’t present that actually was and trying to do stuff that was already completed. So, it really didn’t come as a surprise to me when they insisted on putting Malwarebytes 3.0 in her computer, even though she already had McAfee antivirus/malware software installed. As of December 12, 2016; I’ve finally moved away from Office 2010 and have an annual subscription to Office 365. Having more than one aged Windows 10 powered computer; I had no desire to drop around four-hundred bucks on computers that may or may not make it another four years. So, “Yeah,” I felt that the ninety-nine-dollar annual fee was rather worth it. Continue reading Office 365 And JAWS 18: Self-Publishing: Accessible Web Host’s Internet 101.
Based on my little Java 8 Update 111 experience; anyone using Jaws 17 or any of the JAWS for Windows versions might want to consider deactivating the Java bridge before taking new Java updates in future. I’m not sure how it is on 32 bit machines running JFW. But on my 64 bit Windows 10 powered computers the only way to get JAWS to work with Java involved turning the Java Bridge off and then restarting the computer before turning it back on again. On Friday, October 14, 2016 I reactivated comments across the board on this site. I had disabled them for a few months due to Comment Spam and a bit of stalking from one cranky assed bitch of a business owner from Stanhope NJ. If you are like me; you’ve probably discovered by now that setting up Internet Information Services on the Windows 10 platform isn’t exactly a walk in the park. If you’re like me; you’ve probably noticed that the number of file formats that Microsoft uses with its Word application keeps racking up with each new office release; the latest being 2016. This means that older versions of a Word Document are being viewed in compatibility mode rather than in just a regular old screen. To work on the Old file; one is advised to upgrade it to the latest and greatest document format. However, if you are just warehousing old files for future reference; the question must be asked, “What happens when Microsoft decides to stop supporting the older file formats?” Continue reading Escape The Microsoft Word Trap By Converting Documents To Pdf And Txt: Self-Publishing: Accessible Web Host’s Internet 101.

While out with a friend and their daughter for dinner one night; I found myself slightly irritated with the addiction both of them seemed to have with their electronic devices. “Yes!” I’m talking about them stupid Smart Phones and, even those text receiving, Dumb Phones people like me carry. On July 13, 2016, I gave my machines the green light to take the JAWS For Windows 17,0.2417 Update and was pleased to see that support for the Windows 10 calculator was back. Granted; Freedom Scientific’s Support for this particular windows app only consisted of one keystroke; insert plus control and the D key so you can read the display from anywhere in the calculator window. However, it really was helpful to have; complementing a change I noted about a week earlier that Microsoft themselves had slipped in on their end, which made the Windows 10 Calculator far more user friendly to screen reader users in general. Thanks to Microsoft; a blind user doesn’t have to deal with the curser moving to each number (and other controls in the app) every time a key is pressed; making orientation with a screen reader much easier.

If you’ve recently discovered that the JFW keyboard command Control, Insert, D no longer allows you to hear what is in the Windows 10 Calculator display area; this is most likely do to Freedom Scientifics June 7, 2016 update to JAWS 17. I’d have believed the problem was on my end when I discovered this lack of functionality after taking the 17.0.2211 update to JAWS For Windows. However, the ability to read the Windows 10 Calculator display area via a simple keystroke went bye-bye on both of my Dell XPS desktop computers. Even after uninstalling JAWS and using the 17.0.2211 executable from the Freedom Scientific website to install it again; the previously functioning keyboard command for reading the Windows 10 Calculator display area is gone.
