Covey tells us that Independent Will is a beautiful thing! Why? Because it is the one endowment we have that makes it possible to carry out the plans we’ve developed through imagination, conscience and self-awareness. Our independent will is the very thing that can make us when it comes to being successful and well liked in life or break us when it isn’t exercised wisely.
Mr. Covey tells us that the first of four generations of time management is differentiated by the fact that it involves taking notes and writing checklists. He says the second generation involves appointment books and calendars. Generation three involves the attributes of generations one and two, plus goal setting and daily planning, in order to reach the goals that have been set. Mr. Covey tells us that it really is possible to say no to people with a smile and without feeling guilty about it. Stephen points out that if we are working from part two of his personal management matrix it is easy to say know because everything is in place; Part 2 providing values and principles for us to measure the request against.
Moving into part two of Mr. Covey’s personal management matrix requires people to be working from a center based on principles if they are to accomplish those things which are truly important. He points out here that there really aren’t any tools available yet that will help a person to figure out how to do this but tells us that we can use our mission statement as a guide. Mr. Stephen Covey tells us that a Quadrant 2 Tool should allow for flexibility in scheduling. It should have a place where we can keep our mission statement; list of our life rolls and goals handy so we can access them whenever we want; making it easy to check and make sure that our time is spent in line with what is truly important to us. But Stephen also recommends that it be a tool that allows for us to organize our time by week rather than day. It is also the kind of tool that should be portable and allow for some spontaneity. So! Now we’ve got our week planned out. Now! What do we do? “Live it!” How? By making the changes we need to make based upon our mission statement and goals, plus principles and values. Mr. Covey points out here; living a life that is more in line with our inner most values is far more meaningful than a life that is simply driven by reacting to impulse and schedule driven demands.
Stephen R. Covey tells us here that the main thing that this new fourth generation of personal time management does for us is to put people at a higher importance than things. It also focuses upon results rather than time. It gives us the opportunity to be effective rather than just efficient. Stephen says this is because we are living a planned out week that is value and principle driven, which Mr. Covey assures us is something far better than if we were to simply stick to the first, second, and, now popular, third model of personal time management.
Mr. Covey writes under this heading that, if we want to get a lot of stuff done, we need to learn to delegate things to other people. He tells us that if we continue to delegate work to time (in other words continually stick to rigid schedules) we are only efficient; losing sight of what is more important and meaningful in our day to day transactions. If we could simply accept that we are not able to do it all; we would be much better off and get a lot more done.
Never heard of Gopher Delegation before? If you are thinking it’s basically dictating to someone else their every move in working on something for you, “You’d be one hundred percent correct!” Have you ever been the Gopher being delegated to? Did you like it? I know I don’t when people try to make a Gopher out of me! Thankfully there are better methods of delegation out there and a few people actually know how to use them.
Mr. Covey explains to us that Stewardship Delegation is focused upon results; not telling someone what method to use in order to get a job done. “Yes!” When delegating a task to someone we will want to point out a few things which might take time in the beginning. Stephen Covey tells us that every one of the 7 habits in his book is centered in the Quadrant 2 Paradigm. He tells us that, as we begin to work more and more on what is important, the easier it will be for us to continue to stay in the area of Quadrant/Part 2, as we lead our lives going forward.
