Noisy nights and latch checks: Listening to the canine alarm.

As annoying as little yapper dogs can be sometimes, they do have their place. At first, when my downstairs neighbor’s dog started barking at 1:00 AM, I thought it was because the floor creaked a little as I walked from my desk in the bedroom towards the kitchen of my apartment. Hardwood floors do that in old buildings when it’s damp out, “No matter how careful you try to be!”

At first, I was irritated, swearing quietly, as the sound did catch me off guard. Then I realized something was up when I noticed the dog was barking right at the door of its own apartment. “That’s when I heard the noise.”

If I’m not mistaken, it would seem that someone tried entering the building. Sometimes the dog barks when my downstairs neighbor has guests leaving or entering her apartment. But I’m pretty sure that this time, “That wasn’t the case.”

I could be wrong of course, and more than likely am. Nevertheless though, I decided that safety was more important than my downstairs neighbor’s unhappiness over me doing something that would make her dog bark further. So, after I listen to see what was going on outside through my kitchen window and heard nothing, I walked down the steps and, “I checked the damn front door to the building.”

It doesn’t always fully latch and when I went down the steps, I found that it wasn’t this time, either. The little doggy was right there barking away, too. But that’s just what little dogs do. So, Puppy, “You’re forgiven.”

I’m wide awake again now. But… I’m sure I can dial it down. If I can’t, I can’t. Oh well. “This too shall pass!”
