During This Brian’s Head Space MP3 Podcast, Brian talks about some of the limitations that society’s prejudices about blindness present for him and a possible strategy for getting around the average person’s ignorance with regard to the matter.
In reality, most people keep me at arm’s length.
When I start talking about the things I do, it seems to go in one ear and out the other. Most folks are simply amazed that I can put one foot in front of the other and walk across town without getting killed.
When I’m not being judged due to my blindness, I’m written off by many for surviving on things like Social Security and Section 8. Apparently, while many will say to my face that I should be allowed to benefit from these programs, I’m aware that many also feel that I haven’t earned the right to have these benefits and a few more.
With me walking being so amazing and awe inspiring for many, it’s no small wonder that job opportunities for me tend to be thin on the ground. And yet… I am a Self-Publishing Author making at least a little money on my own. But… I know I can do better!”
So… What can I do to make the statement, “I’m a Man Who’s a Blind Person of Interest,” a reality? Well… I think it just might be high time I get people’s attention via the internet. If I can get people to start showing up on Brian Schnabel’s Head Space, it just might be the eye opener that causes folks to put their prejudices on hold for a little while at the very least.
How to do that? Well… Thanks to some law changes in recent years, there is a long-standing tool that blind people have been using for decades that can now be used more freely which will certainly come to my aid. I just need to get in the habit of surreptitiously incorporating it into more and more of my social interactions with folks. Mini Digital Recorders are a beautiful thing, “Don’t you know.”
Between that and a long established wicked strong intuition… Well now… Yeah… Maybe surf will be up on Brian Schnabel’s Head Space sooner than later after all.
