A blind man’s encounter: Navigating paranoia on West End Avenue.

I was walking across the West End Avenue Foster Street intersection on the evening of September 30, 2024, on my way back from dinner at Dominick’s, glancing over at an approaching car as I did so. As I continued walking, I could hear the driver of the vehicle freaking out on the phone because I looked at them. Then the kid pulls up with his car and goes, “How are you seeing me?”

Two things went through my mind at that moment. “He’s Possibly high or off his meds and definitely paranoid.”

In response to his question, I pointed at the front of his car with my cane and gave a one-word answer figuring he could work out the finer points for himself. “Engine.”

He then drove on after sitting there for another five seconds. I suspect he turned around and drove past me again, based on the sound and behavior of a vehicle that approached me as I continued towards Newtonian Gardens. I could be wrong in that assessment, “But I doubt it!”

It was just such an odd situation to be in. “A blind guy looks your way, and you act as if it’s a capital offense? Really?”

His entire attitude struck me as being hostile, as if the gentleman was looking for a fight. But he stayed in his car, which was fine by me. Otherwise, given his behavior and demeanor as it was, we might have moved from, “How are you seeing me,” to, “How did you put me in the hospital?”
